Your Shopify products are connected to ChatGPT Ads, and the team is about to commit its first budget. Before spending, verify the store, ad account and permitted purchase path, then name the paid-order outcome and spend limit. A connection badge or a higher conversion count cannot tell you whether the campaign adds customers or earns back its cost.
Confirm the paid channel you are setting up
OpenAI’s September 16 announcement introduced its Shopify advertising integration for US merchants. Its current Shopify setup guide describes US availability and says other markets will follow. Confirm eligibility in your own store and ad account before committing budget.
The ChatGPT Ads app listing describes product synchronization, campaign management and conversion measurement. Installing the app is free; advertising spend is a separate decision.
Keep the campaign's paid traffic separate from other visits or orders associated with ChatGPT. An order that arrived after an organic recommendation does not establish that a paid campaign produced it. Existing traffic is useful context when deciding what a new campaign would need to add.
Write the purchase definition before choosing the metric
Decide which commercial outcome the test must inform: paid orders, new customers, returns-adjusted revenue, or contribution after media and the relevant order costs. Give that outcome an owner and a written definition.
For example, an acquisition team might care about first-time customers whose orders remain paid after cancellations and refunds. That is a different question from how many purchase conversions the advertising platform credits. Both can be useful, provided the team knows which decision each number supports.
According to OpenAI's setup guide, the connection includes the advertising account, product feed and OpenAI Pixel for Shopify; campaign creation also asks for an optimization event. Record the actual selections. A wrong account, an unfinished feed sync or an event that represents checkout intent can change the interpretation of an otherwise plausible report.
Do not assume that installing the Shopify app proves a separate Conversions API integration is active. Inventory the paths your store actually uses.
Check what the conversion report can see
OpenAI's conversion measurement guidance ties reporting to the connected source, configured event, attribution window and eligible ad-click signals. It also says reported totals can include modeled conversions where available.
For the implemented path, follow the conversion tracking documentation: check that redirects preserve the OpenAI click reference, oppref. If Pixel and API both send the same conversion, check that their event name and event ID agree. Keep the required permission conditions intact. These are implementation checks; they do not establish additional customers.
Where the account exposes diagnostics, use them to inspect a representative permitted purchase path. Record what you can verify and what remains unknown. Do not invent an order-level match when only aggregate reporting is available. One successful path cannot clear every device, domain, checkout configuration or consent state.
Use a first-budget decision record
Keep this record beside the campaign brief. For each row, name an owner, date the supporting evidence and mark the result verified, failed or unknown. A failed or unknown row needs a next action before it can support a budget recommendation.
Record | Evidence and decision |
|---|---|
Store and campaign | Evidence to bring: Connected store and ad account, country, currency, time zone, campaign and optimization event Decision it supports: Whether the intended account and outcome are being tested |
Product and purchase path | Evidence to bring: Feed state, selected products, active event paths and available diagnostics Decision it supports: Whether setup needs repair before the report can guide a decision |
Comparison window | Evidence to bring: Reporting dates, attribution scope, order-status rules and the time each export was taken Decision it supports: Whether the two reports can be compared meaningfully |
Commercial outcome | Evidence to bring: Paid-order and new-customer definitions, refunds, relevant costs and contribution Decision it supports: Whether the business result meets the team's stated objective |
Budget decision | Evidence to bring: Responsible person, spend ceiling, next review point and stop condition Decision it supports: Whether to continue the bounded test, investigate, or stop |
Choose the review point using the store's purchase delay and reporting behavior. A universal number of days is not a substitute for enough usable evidence. Preserve the original setup record when changing the campaign so later results do not silently combine different treatments.
A small store may not produce enough orders to distinguish a useful effect within an affordable test. Start with inexpensive setup checks and an amount the team can afford to lose. If the evidence needed would exceed that limit, reduce or stop the test and record the result as unresolved.
Allow for two different clocks
OpenAI's campaign quickstart says impressions and clicks can appear before spend updates. A displayed zero does not necessarily mean that no charges have accrued. Assign someone to monitor actual campaign status and the spending limit while reporting catches up.
There is also a commercial clock. Payment, cancellation, return and customer classification may settle after the first conversion appears. Save dated exports rather than comparing a fresh platform report with an older commerce export. Use the same order scope when comparing conversion reports.
Consider a planning example, not a merchant result: the campaign report rises from eight credited conversions to twelve, while the comparison period still contains the same twenty paid orders. The first finding is a change in the report. Check its maturity, scope and definitions before claiming four additional orders.
If paid orders also rise, investigate other changes: a promotion, a different offer, existing customer demand, another channel or a stock recovery could contribute. A causal claim requires a credible comparison of what would have happened without the advertising. That is also the boundary between attribution estimates and causal evidence.
Let the evidence choose the next action
An unavailable app, wrong account or failed purchase path calls for setup work. Unsettled reporting calls for a later, consistently scoped comparison. A verified path with weak commercial results calls for an investigation of the offer, creative, demand and economics.
The setup explanation should lose priority when representative paths work, event and campaign settings agree, and the remaining difference is explained by reporting scope. Keep the conclusion limited to the populations checked.
Finally, identify the control that stops campaign spend. OpenAI's Shopify guide says disconnecting the store does not delete the advertising account or existing campaigns. Do not use disconnection as a substitute for checking campaign state.
Bring the completed record to the first budget review. Continue only with a clear owner, a bounded commitment and an explicit account of what the evidence supports and what remains unknown.
